Correa Senate bid could open up Supervisorial seat

Martin Wisckol writes in today’s O.C. Register that if Lou Correa does indeed run for the 34th State Senate District, his Supervisorial seat might open up – and that district now has a Republican voter registration advantage. Interesting. Wisckol suspects that the race for that seat would be dominated by Santa Ana Council Members, including two Democrats (Jose Solorio or Claudia Alvarez) and one Republican (Carlos Bustamante).

Bustamante already works for the County of Orange, as an Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services. He has a background in law enforcement, and has held various posts in Orange County. He also has extensive military experience. For whatever reason, Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido opposed his candidacy and recruited a caucasian candidate to run against him. However, Bustamante prevailed and he is now perhaps the most high-profile Latino Republican elected official in central Orange County. You have to wonder though if Bustamante, as a county employee, will be able to stand up to the powerful county employees’ union. I hope so.

Solorio and Alvarez are equally ridiculous and not worth noting. However, could former Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly have an interest in the Correa Supervisorial seat? He is currently the elected county Clerk-Recorder and would be a lot tougher candidate than either Solorio or Alvarez.

The best news is that the GOP now has an edge in registration in the First Supervisorial District. Congratulations to everyone who has worked on that registration effort.
