I just returned from purchasing a copy of the Holy Qur’an. For the past few weeks we have been hearing about a Florida pastor’s plan to burn hundreds of copies of the book central to the religion of Islam today. Of course, after considering a warning by General Patraeus that such a provocative action would put U.S. troops in danger, the pastor reconsidered and canceled his plans. This does not mean that he has extinguished Islamophobia from his heart.
In contrast to this ignorance – which goes well beyond the book burning controversy and the so-called “ground zero mosque” debate – I decided to do something very simple; buy a Qur’an and read it. I would have already done so, but I dropped out of Qur’anic studies at the University as the syllabus coupled with my history courses seemed to be too much! Nevertheless, today, I resume that open minded inquiry that I had years ago. I encourage you to do the same.
On this 9th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, it is important to cultivate a culture of coexistence away from the ashes of fundamentalisms so that one day perhaps we may truly enjoy each others’ company in peace.
This country is the most tolerant country in the world – that is why I came here! We did not attack them they attacked us. In London as well as in Paris people are getting sick and tired of nut case muslims wanting to encroach their ridiculous shari laws on civilized people. Westerners don’t want to hang their girls and we don’t want to wear tents to protect us from rape etc….…

Why relgious tolorance works in this country is people here are mostly christain and believe that everyone has the right to pray to anything they wish. The reason there is NO religious tolerance in Muslim countries is because they are Muslim!
We don’t care that your muslim here, just don’t bring your backward culture here!

No thank you! I am only so tolerant! When it comes to a religion’s that seems to incite the nuts of the world to hang kids and stone young innocent girls, then I lose my tolerance!

Who said anything about converting? One can approach the study of religion through being methodologically agnostic. I am reading the Qur’an in the understanding that this book has inspired the poetry of Rumi and the terror of Bin Laden alike.

But since you bring it up…Rumi has withstood the test of time and his poems are revered by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The same will not be said about Bin Laden.
