Hail Mimi, Queen of Hate…

Okay, maybe a bit histrionic of a title, but State Senate candidate for District 33 Mimi Walters has really been on a bigoted demagogue roll the last couple days. She was the first out of the gate shrieking about how the California Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling endangered traditional marriage and vowing to fight it to the death (e-mail reproduced over the flip), just a day after her strident anti-immigrant mailer (reprinted by Art here) which also juxtaposed a scary darkened photo of her Indian-American rival Harry Sidhu with the horrible insults “liberal,” “ACLU,” and “politically correct”

Now, nobody is saying her opponent Anaheim City Councilman Harry Sidhu is any great shakes. (…Do you hear that great deafening silence? That’s actually the sound of nobody saying Harry Sidhu is any great shakes. Bask in it…) If the past is any guide it’s only a matter of time before Harry comes back with an “I hate gays and immigrants more than Mimi does” response. But there’s got to be SOME way you Republican and DTS voters from Fullerton to Laguna Niguel can let Mimi know that picking on the old dependable minorities is no longer the way to get your votes.

Dear Republicans, (cue concern troll music) if your party continues to be the party of divisiveness, exclusion, and scapegoating, it is going to shrivel up and go the way of the Whigs. And this Democrat looks no further than Santa Ana to be reminded he doesn’t want to live in a one-party state. It will be nice to have 2/3 in Sacramento for a while, to pursue a few very important projects (like single-payer healthcare, passing some sensible budgets with enhanced revenue, and getting rid of the 2/3 rule itself) but we are going to eventually need a counterbalance.

I’m really sorry you don’t have more honorable candidates running for statewide office like Ron St. John in the 46th CD and Donald Ritze in the 3rd Supervisorial District, but your future cannot be in bashing gays and immigrants, two of the most productive segments of society, of whom many millions of other Californians are inordinately fond. I prefer not to weigh down this post with dreary statistics, but will provide them in comments if I have to. Till then, I don’t know what decent Republicans can do in the 33rd (complain to Mimi’s people at 949-457-7333?), but you’ve always got Gary Pritchard in November! Mimi Walters Calls Supreme Court Ruling on Gay Marriage a Travesty for Family Values

SACRAMENTO — Today, in response to the California Supreme Court ruling that struck down Proposition 22 on a 4-3 vote, Assemblywoman Mimi Walters called the decision a travesty for family values.

‘The Supreme Court today blatantly disregarded the will of Californians to protect the sacred institution of marriage. The Court stated that it could not ‘find that the retention of the traditional definition of marriage constitutes a compelling state interest,” Walters said. ‘I could not disagree more strongly with the Court’s ruling today. Marriage between a man and a woman is the foundation of our society, and the Court’s action is a travesty for family values.’

‘Today’s decision completely ignores the will of over 60% of California’s voters who approved Proposition 22 eight years ago,’ Walters continued.

The California Marriage Protection Act, an initiative in circulation that has gathered 1.5 million signatures and will appear on the November ballot, will write into the California Constitution that the only marriages recognized in this state are those between one man and one woman.

‘I pledge to fight the Supreme Court’s decision to allow gay marriage in California by working to ensure the passage of the California Marriage Protection Act this November,’ Walters concluded.
